AREATZA´S " GUARDIA CIVILES", DELICIOUS CAKES TO TASTE AND COOK

COOKING MEETING

5th and 6th level students from the 3 Basque schools taking part in this small project: Areatza, Arrankudiaga and Zeberio, met in ZUBIALDE school to cook and have fun. They preapared a delicious menu for about 80 people consisting on pasta with tomato, Spanish omelette and chocolate lollipops !!! It was a great success!!!

BLACK AND WHITE CHOCOLATE SPONGE CAKE

Areatza school from the Basque Country shared this recipe with us.You can cook it at home and enjoy!!! BLACK AND WHITE CHOCOLATE SPONGE CAKE INGREDIENTS: • 5 eggs • 1 lemon • Black and white chocolate • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 cup flour • ½ cup sugar STEPS TO COOK: • Preheat the oven at 220 cº. • Break the eggs in a bowl. • Add the flour and the sugar to the eggs, and mix the ingredients. • Beat the mixture. • Grate a lemon and add the lemon sprinkles to the mixture. • Break the chocolate bars and melt them in the microwave. • Add the melted chocolate to the mixture and beat it. • Grease the bowl with some butter. • Pour the mixture in the bowl. • Put in the oven for 20’. ENJOY IT!!!

COTTAGE PIE

Students from Arrankudiaga school in the BAsque Country sent this British recipe. They cooked it at school with the help of a school father. COTTAGE PIE. Ingredients: olive oil, 1 large onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1 small can of tomato puree, 800 gr mince meat, dried mixed herbs, salt and pepper, 4 tablespoons of sugar. For the topping: 4 large potatoes peeled and diced, 4 tablespoons of butter. Method: 1- Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat. Add the chopped onion, the crushed garlic and the chopped green pepper and cook over a medium heat until soft. Add pieces of mince and cook to brown. 2- Add the can of tomato puree and the mixed herbs and sugar. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover the simmer for 30 minutes. 3- Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in water until soft. Drain and mash with the butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 4- Preheat the oven to 190ºC/ gas mark 5 5- Put mince into a pyrex dish and spread potatoe puree on top. ERDÄPFELPUFFER (POTATO FRITTERS)

This recipe was worked out by 11 year old students from Zubialde school in the Basque Country with the help of a German- Basque citizen that kindly offered himself to cook with the children. It was great fun and the result was very tasty indeed. ERDÄPFELPUFFER (POTATO FRITTERS) Potato fritters for 5 persons: 1,5 kg potatoes 2 onions 200 g bacon 2 eggs salt, pepper, oil Peel the potatoes and grate them using the big holes in the grater. Put the potato stripes on a clean kitchen towel and wring them out. Peel the onions and cut them into cubes. Mix the grated potatoes, the onion cubes and the eggs and add salt and pepper as you like it. Cut the bacon into squares and fine slices of not more than two mm thick. You first put three or four bacon slices into the hot pan. When they start to roast add the potato mixture on top. Use a spoon to form a slice. As soon as the potato fritters starts to turn golden brown and get crispy on the downside, turn them around. Bon appétit!

CARROT, APPLE & SULTANA CAKE

This is an English recipe that students from Zubialde school in the Basque Country prepared with a British school father. It is really easy, you can try at home: CARROT, APPLE & SULTANA CAKE - Turn oven to 180ºC - Crack 4 eggs into a bowl - Add 150 g. of brown sugar - Add 1/2 glass of olive oil. Whisk! - Add 200g. of mixed flour with a packet of yeast powder, a pinch of salt and cinammon powder. - Mix in 300g. of grated carrots & apples and add sultanas to taste!! Line a baking tin with baking paper. Fill & put cake in the oven to cook for about 40 to 45 minutes. ENJOY!! YUM YUM!!!
